Why the Flat Lay Co.’s makeup bag should be your go-to
This innovative design by The Flat Lay Co. combines a cosmetic bag and mat into one practical design. It is intended to make applying your makeup on your travels far easier, and less time consuming, by cutting out the need to rummage and preventing any roll-aways.
I had first heard of these makeup bags from my cousin but we were sceptical about whether the lack of structure would provide as much protection to our makeup. I can honestly say though, after using mine everyday for the last month it is amazing, and definitely the way forward for packing travel makeup. I’ve even continued using it at home because it’s just so handy to keep the basics in one place.
I was sent an Open Flat makeup bag by The Flat Lay Co. not long before my last trip. To see how good this new design really is I took it along on my road trip in the USA to see for myself how well it functioned. Now that I'm completely won over by the design, I have broken down eight reasons why I recommend getting one:
Are you tired of rummaging around in your cosmetic bag? Hopelessly searching for that one thing that keeps escaping you then getting fed up and tipping it all out at the expense of lost and broken items? Palettes and pencils are so fragile and all those times where we’ve tipped them out and hastily rammed them back in is one step closer to ruining a collection that has taken us years to perfect.
Well the Open Flat makeup bag is the answer to your rummaging nightmares! You’ll never have to dig around for something again as it combines both a cosmetic bag with a mat. It only takes seconds to pull up the drawstring to close the bag and there’s a small looped handle to make carrying easier. When laid out flat the mat keeps your makeup in one place, prevents it from rolling away and keeps it clean, plus there's no more digging around because it’s all set out flat.
2. Drawstring fastening
You might be thinking “how can a drawstring fastening be secure” but the toggle is strong and holds it closed with no problems. It also means you can fit so much in without worrying about a zip busting, poppers pulling apart or velcro tearing open.
The other bonus to having a drawstring is that it creates a lip that stops your makeup from rolling out when you flatten out the bag into a mat.
The Open Flat bags organisational features include:
Two velcro pockets, one at the front and one at the back - I used them for lashes and tweezers.
Inside zip pocket - I put a couple of my palettes in here to keep them extra secure.
Four elasticated loops - I use two for brushes and the other two for my eyebrow pencils and lip liners.
Of course you don’t have to use the Open Flat bag just for cosmetics, it’s great for anything you don’t want to waste time digging for. A useful alternative is to protect your toothbrush and razor from getting wet or dirty near the sink by using the bag in it’s mat form.
If you keep your brushes in a separate bag you can use the elasticated bands to organise pencils and liners instead or nail tools, tweezers etc.
5. Quilted protection
As I mentioned before, I just came back from a three week road trip in the USA. I moved hotels eight times and my luggage got turfed around more times than my nerves could handle, and yet my makeup never broke.
The quilting makes a huge difference towards protecting your makeup. It means the layer surrounding your makeup is not only padded but it’s also stronger so you can rest assured that your makeup is more protected than in most makeup bags.
I have the 50cm bag which is perfect as your main makeup bag, as it holds so much more than the 30cm, which is better suited for touch-up items you want to keep in your handbag or even bits of jewellery.
As you can see I have plenty in my bag but I can still get so much more in. In fact I actually started my trip with half as much makeup but Sephora was calling me to its doors, so I ended up adding to the load. Despite adding so much more, it took it all and still closed up with no hassle at all. I even had a big 14.5cm x 13cm palette in there on top of everything else and had no issues closing it.
They are very reasonably priced for how amazing they are, all are under £20! The 30cm retails at £12.50, the 50cm at £14.50 and the new tropical print is £19.50. There is an additional shipping cost for Europe, Australia, USA and Canada but the UK Standard shipping is FREE! For more info click here.
I can understand if you’re thinking, “how can we trust it really works or is worth the money if she is working with them”. Well I want you to know that I’m not required to write a blog post about their bags, if their products weren’t worth talking about then you never would have heard about them from me, but here I am telling you they’re great, because they are!
I honestly think it’s a massive leap forward in terms of travelling with makeup and beauty products. If you’re a professional MUA or travel with an extensive makeup collection then I would say this product is better as an accompaniment to your main case, but for any amateurs like me this is perfect as your main makeup bag.
